History
In 1972-73 many Miamisburg citizens were concerned with the lack of resources for young people in downtown Miamisburg and the vandalism occurring possibly because of this. Their combined efforts, led by an assistant pastor from United Theological seminary, resulted in the Burg Center's incorporation as a youth center in December 1973. Initially any interested young people from age 2-20 were welcome. Staff was students from the seminary and funding came from local churches. By 1978, participation was limited to those between 8 & 15 years of age.
Both funding and staffing have gone through many changes since then. In 1977-78, the Center had a capital funds drive which allowed funds for the building to meet city codes and initiated business support of the Center. By 1980 the City of Miamisburg provided half the funding, but feeling they should not provide operational funds for non-city programs, provided none by 1985. Donations from businesses, clubs, individuals, and United Way have increased as city funds decreased. The Board of Directors, in 1984, began special fundraising projects. In May 1987, the Center moved into the new facility leased from the City of Miamisburg . The inside was completed with donations from local supporters and has shown itself to be wonderfully suited to our purpose. In 1989 the name was changed to The Miamisburg Youth Center. In 1998 the Center became an independent United Way agency and approximately one-third of Center funding is provided by this alliance. Community support has not only continued, but grows consistently.
Though the Center has gone through many changes, the mission and commitment to "our" young people has stayed the same.
